The Audi Skysphere Concept
The Skysphere is a concept car from a roadster 100% electric and independent of the automaker German Audi presented in 2021 foreshadowing a model Grand Touring (GT) bénéficaint a wheelbase variable. The concept car is presented on August 10, 2021at Audi's design studio in Malibu, USA, where it was designed and drawn, then the August 15, 2021 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
The Skysphere is designed as a pure-electric vehicle but maintains an extended front bonnet reminiscent of traditional grand touring machines. While its dimensions are retro, the Skysphere’s design is forward-looking and serves to closely preview the next generation of Audi’s ‘progressive luxury’ design language.
The Audi sky sphere concept¹ combines two different driving experiences in one vehicle: a grand touring experience and a sports experience. This is made possible thanks to a spectacular technical feature: the variable wheelbase. Electric motors and a sophisticated mechanism with interlocking body and frame components allow both the wheelbase
With a 0-60 mph time of 4 seconds & 310-mile range, Audi claims you can drive it in just 4 seconds. While the Skysphere appears large, its weight is 3,968 pounds. This car also comes with air suspension and rear-wheel steering.
The Skysphere hides one neat trick underneath its stunning bodywork – it can change its wheelbase on the fly, transforming from a long, imposing grand tourer to a nimble roadster at the touch of a button. Actuators behind the front axle move the entire front clip of the car rearward, shortening the wheelbase by nearly 10 inches in its transition between the so-called “GT” and “Sport” modes.
