Leiber started her own company in 1963 after working as a handbag designer for other brands. Her crystal minaudières and evening handbags are made of a metal shell encrusted with Swarovski crystals and plated in silver or gold. These purses come in various shapes, including baby pigs, watermelon slices, cupcakes, peacocks, penguins, and snakes.
Her purses are sold in high-end boutiques throughout the world and cost thousands of dollars. The purses have become a status symbol for many ladies, including several First Ladies, from Mamie Eisenhower to Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton, to whom she has presented them as gifts. Animals are a recurring theme in her designs, and they frequently adorn the collection's most expensive purses, with some animal-shaped minaudières costing more than US$7,000. The Judith Leiber boutiques are exclusive as there are only four in the world. They are located in New Delhi, Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
