Veer-Zaara Veer-Zaara is a Hindi-language period epic romance drama film released in 2004. Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta play the titular star crossed lovers in the film: Zaara Hayaat Khan is the daughter of a Pakistani politician and Veer Pratap Singh is an Indian Air Force officer. Veer is imprisoned on spurious allegations, and his case is being fought by a young Pakistani lawyer named Saamiya Siddiqui.
Zaara, who was already betrothed, dashes into Veer's arms, making her father fall sick. Zaara's father, Jehangir, has a high-profile reputation that would be tarnished if she ran with an Indian. Veer complies with Zaara's request and departs, but her fiance, enraged by Zaara's humiliation, has him wrongfully imprisoned under the name Rajesh Rathore on grounds of being an Indian spy. As a gesture of goodwill, the Pakistani government decided to investigate unsolved cases involving Indian detainees in 2004. Prisoner 786's defence is Saamiya Siddiqui's maiden case as a fledgling Pakistani lawyer. For the past 22 years, the prisoner has not talked to anyone. Veer Pratap Singh, after being addressed by his name, opens up to Saamiya and tells her his story.
